To any true blue American, I am sure that this imagination is inconceivable even in their wildest of dreams. Unfortunately, for an Indian, forget dreams, even in reality our sensitivity does not move an inch in the event of occurrence of a similar scenario, which is just about to happen in India. It is nothing but most disgraceful that while our faint hope (or hollow rhetoric, if you will) of cleansing the extant Indian political system is wilting in front of our eyes, we are letting it happen as thoroughly hypocrite spectators. It comes as a blatant slap on the face of the already fractured judicial system and fragmented political structure that an extradited underworld don, Abu Salem, who is accountable for plotting and murdering hundreds of people in one of the most gruesome blasts in Mumbai in 1993, has the audacity to join politics, by contesting in the impending Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. More pathetic were the ‘arrogantly shameless’ statements that were scripted in posters in Mubarakpur promoting Salem’s candidature (Hum pakke Hind hain, seene mein sher ka dil rakhe hai, agar saath mila aapka to rukh toofan ka more sakte hain, vatan ki abru bachayenge, hum ek khushal Bharat banayenge).
The more I read this, the more I’m bewildered by the audacity of the man, an audacity which arises from our very own home-grown apathy.But then there is nothing surprising as Indian politics anyway was always a haven for criminals (According to reports, almost one-quarter of the over 540 people elected to Parliament in 2004 face criminal charges). But in this editorial, I am not referring to just any other petty criminal. Here, I am talking about a person who has been accused of being one of the masterminds and has been held responsible for the logistics and cold blooded execution of one of the biggest serial blasts in India, which not only killed hundreds of innocent people, but its aftershocks culminated into blood-spattered communal riots (wherein there was a complete massacre of countless people that once again brought back memories of almost forgotten wounds, the sense of constant suspicion and recurrent insecurity). I reiterate, I am talking about a man for whom the CBI spent three torturous years of sleepless nights and won one of the best executed cases in history; and that too against the established lawyers of Europe. This is the same man who has been on a run for years, and who even had plastic surgery done to conceal his identity. And when that man today conceitedly claims to have substance in him to lead a country of a billion, the popular media, which is assumed to be the conscience keeper of the common man, has willingly and deplorably underplayed this grave news by carrying it in the inside pages in form of a tiny story – this sufficiently indicates that there is something inherently and terribly wrong with our sense of ethics and justice.My anger is not against Abu Salem merely, for I know that he is just another coward who is following suit like his predecessor politicians in order to save his neck. My anger is also against the very lawyers who actually advised him to get into politics. Shame that they call themselves lawyers!
My irritation is against the silence of the polity and even the Election Commission, which never spares an opportunity to showcase whatever little it has achieved. My anger is directed against this deafening silence, which is holding each and every citizen to ransom.What more, amidst this conspiracy of silence – of the polity, the regulator and media – unmindful of probity and morality, dangerous political parties like Apna Dal (This is the same party that has supported Bablu Srivastava, another mafia don, and thankfully lost in the last Lok Sabha elections) are eager to associate themselves with Salem and reap political capital (cheap publicity) out of this issue. The party president, Sonelal Patel, has blatantly stated that his party is open and not averse to promote Dawood Ibrahim and other criminals as well, if they abandon the crime path and aspire to do social service by joining politics. If not for the grave consequences upon an under-developed state like Uttar Pradesh in particular and Indian polity in general, this entire episode would be achingly amusing!Well known sociologist Max Weber had lamented that ‘freedom and democracy are only possible where the resolute will of a nation not to allow itself to be ruled like sheep is permanently alive.’ USA celebrated this month for having crossed the 300 million population mark; ironically, around 300 million Indians live below the poverty line. The will seems dead, freedom further so, and if illiteracy, unemployment and poverty are all that our criminal politicians have been able to provide the majority of our countrymen till date, pray tell me what democratic difference remains between us “intellectuals” and Max’s sheep?

The U.S. Military, Managing Medical Information from the Battlefield

For the first time in the history of the U.S. Military, battlefield information management and information technology systems are enabling improved quality of care and communications by capturing information electronically.

The Theater Medical Information Program – Joint, a Department of Defense (DoD) and Military Health System (MHS) program provides information management tools to the U.S. Military’s deployed medical community. This mobile, flexible software system, designed for low-to-no communications environments, supports clinical care documentation, medical supply and equipment tracking, patient movement visibility, and health surveillance in a deployed setting. TMIP-J operates on a combination of hand-held devices, notebooks and deployable servers and mirrors the capabilities of the Military’s U.S.-based medical information management systems.

TMIP-J carries out Presidential and Congressional requirements for establishing a life-long electronic health record for all Service members. Since May 2005, TMIP-J applications have electronically captured more than 1.2 million medical encounters. Patient data is available in near real-time through the DoD Central Data Repository to approved medical personnel throughout the MHS.

This presentation will delve into the challenges and successes TMIP-J faces during the development, update and integration process of the applications supporting the Theater medical business practice, including lessons learned.

Have you heard of Ruhingya Arakan Peoplem at Myanamar, Burma? Sure you’ve heard of Palestine, and Gaza Strip and the ugly occupation of the Palestinian land. And the the 750 passengers from 50 various countries on board the 9 ships who are sailing towards Gaza today. Both situations needs recognition and knowledge to call for justice in both cases. firsly, I received this message from Zakaria Abdullah, about the Most persecuted minority on earth, The Rohingya of Arakan, Myanmar (Burma). The message describes the situation in Burma. I think it’s the interest of all human rights activists to know and support justice for the the Rohingya of Araka people, which Zakari Abdullah described as “the Most persecuted minority on earth”. It reads: According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), the Rohingya people are the most persecuted minorities on earth. Their citizenship was withdrawn and their lands, properties, business establishments and human rights are gone with it. Rohingyas are the ethnic Muslim minorities in the Northern Rakhine [Arakan] State (NRS) of Burma or Myanmar. Concentrated mainly in two townships of Buthidaung and Maungdaw along the border with Bangladesh, they are spread in three other townships of Akyab, Rathedung and Kyautaw. Their population was estimated originally to be between 2.5 – 3 million before the state crackdown on the population in 1978. Those found without registration papers were summarily deported to Bangladesh. The majority of them who had the means were able to find their way to the Middle East and other countries. The military campaign directly targeted civilians resulting in widespread killings, rapes, religious persecutions and destruction of mosques, properties and business establishments. Over 200,000 Rohingyas had reportedly fled to Bangladesh to escape forced labour (without pay) summary executions, torture and other human rights violations. Those who remained in Arakan are living in ghetto style enclaves where their movements are monitored night and day. Movements between villages need a pass from the NaSaKa, the village paramilitary authority. Those who are caught without a pass are beaten and detained and will only be released after payment of fines. Outsiders are not allowed entry into the village therefore news about the condition there are known only when there are ?EUR~inmates?EUR(tm) who managed to slipped out of the enclave. Marriages are also controlled and approval must be sought with certain fees and under stringent conditions. Brides and grooms are required to be quarantined for a few days before the marriage can be held. Some men are reportedly made to undergo bisectomy operation to limit the reproductive ability of the man’s organ. In any event, families are allowed only a maximum of two offspring. The bride reportedly must slept at the quarters of the NaSaKa officer. Despite UN efforts to repatriate refugees back to Arakan, majority of them choose to remain in Bangladesh due to the negative attitude of the ruling Myanmar regime towards Muslims. But since being pressured by Bangladesh to return to Myanmar or to move out, many have tried their luck to sail away to other countries, ?EURoeque sera sera?EUR? (whatever will be will be). Those who drifted into Thailand waters were towed away into the open sea by the Thai Navy after being beaten by local authorities. Four out of five boats reportedly sunk by a storm and one boat was washed ashore and most of the occupants survived. The case of the Rohingya people is a human tragedy that can only happen in a country with godless ideology. But if others chose to earn the wrath of God through their indiscretion, we should do something to earn the blessing of God through humanitarian consideration. In view of the complexity and sensitivity of the issue, subtle pressure has to be applied upon the Myanmar regime while easing restrictions on the entry of refugees from among the Rohingya community on humanitarian ground. Countries like Malaysia that need foreign workers should look at this angle as one source of manpower supply. Rather than bringing in unskilled manpower by the thousands from countries and peoples without a problem, it would be more beneficial to admit and provide asylum to people in desperate need of a homeland. Those who are already in the country must be accorded work permits to enable them to enter the job market and earn a descent living out of their sweat rather than perennially rely on dole outs and UN assistance. We may not be aware, but God is watching! Secondly, A similar appeal concerning the Case of Gaza, I received from my friend, Jenn Chong a message to the members of One Nation People for Peace & Love. The subject as you may guess, is a template letter from Convoy Gaza to all human rights activists and supports. I like to share with you the message. It reads: I, am forwarding message to all to express concern for the safety of the 750 passengers from 50 various countries on board the 9 ships who are sailing towards Gaza today. Israel have issued several threats indicating that they will stop this flotilla by force, and arrest everyone on board. This is an extremely worrying development, and these threats to civilians has to be taken very seriously. Convoy Gaza is appealing to the authorities to ensure the safety of these brave individuals, and for the 15,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid on board. The situation in Gaza is the greatest humanitarian disaster in our time, and it is not only my duty, but the duty of every person worldwide to play their part in making sure the illegal siege on Gaza is lifted. 1.5 million people have been suffering daily due to the effects of this Israeli imposed siege, and the time has come for the world to stand up and say, “Enough Is Enough”. “Will you add your voice to this appeal and send out this message to uphold humanitarian and humanity?, or will you sit idly by and allow Israel to not only attack and imprison this flotilla, but to continue the slow genocide of the Palestinian’s in Gaza?” Humanity is waiting for your response, please share out. When the Founding Fathers of America declared its independence, they could not have imagined that, 232 years later, the United States would be so dependent on foreign countries before oil gushed from a well in Titusville, marking the beginning of the global oil economy.

For how long will America depend on foreign countries for oil?

 The US is literally sitting on a massive energy source this is because one quarter of the world’s coal reserves are located within the nation’s borders.

The US generated 3,940 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity in 2004, with more than half of the electricity coming from coal-fired power stations.

President Obama is not even the first president to promise that America will not rely anymore on countries of the Middle East to get oil. President George W Bush said the US was “addicted to oil” which threatens to undermine future economic growth, in one of his state of the union address.

Former President Bush said “I hope to move beyond a petroleum-based economy, and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of the past”.

While president barrack Obama said, “The days of Washington dragging its heels are over and it will be my Administration’s policy to reverse our dependence on foreign oil while building a new energy economy that will create millions of jobs.”

In a move seen to bring a ray of hope to Americans on the oil issue, Speaking from the White House, the President on Monday announced that he was directing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reconsider an application by California and 13 other states to set stricter limits on greenhouse-gas emissions from cars and trucks, opening the way for tighter fuel efficiency standards nationwide.

Obama has an ambition of directing the Department of Transportation to issue guidelines that will ensure the U.S. auto fleet reaches an average fuel economy of 35 miles per gallon by 2020 at the latest; therefore, the directives signal Obama’s willingness to take on America’s disastrous auto sector, which is bleeding money even as it contributes heavily to climate change and the country’s addiction to foreign oil.

What America should do to get its oil?

- The government must first become independent of oil. It means giving drivers a choice between oil and other fuels.

- Ending oil dependence will require political leadership; the changes required to end oil dependence are far-reaching. Many current proposals are far too small. For the big change needed to solve this problem, presidential leadership is essential.

-  A keen analysis of the various policy and technology alternatives; plug-In-Cars, Biofuels, Fuel Efficiency, Coal, have effectively no impact on the transportation fleet in the short or immediate term unless more electric vehicles are invented.

Although the White House sees ethanol meeting up to 30% of the nation’s fuel use, it admits that it will take around 15 years to switch the nation’s cars to new technologies.

 The forecast of the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows that this figure will exceed 5,840TWh by 2030, with coal still being the dominant player. But coal is the most polluting of all fossil fuels.

 To tackle the environmental impact of burning coal, the president has earmarked a further $281m (£158m) for research into clean coal technology. With all these in mind it remains to be seen whether America will find its own oil.
